Dartmouth College
Class of 1978 Life Sciences Center
Hanover, NH
Dartmouth College has taken a major step forward with the development of an interdisciplinary life sciences facility to house teaching and research for Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Biophysics. The building is located adjacent to the Dartmouth Medical School complex to facilitate interaction with Biomedical research.

The project includes 30 research labs, six teaching labs, a 200-seat auditorium, classrooms, an atrium and rooftop greenhouse complex. A cutting edge nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) lab is located in the lower level capable of housing for 250 Mhz magnets. The project occupies 175,000 gross square feet on a total of five levels. The construction budget is approximately $95,000,000 with an additional $6,000,000 in utility infrastructure upgrades.
Construction began in mid 2008 and is scheduled for completion in 2010. This project is intended to be one of the most energy efficient laboratory buildings ever constructed. The building was designed with an intensive sustainable design process with very aggressive targets for energy use identified early.
The building systems include dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS), chilled beams throughout all laboratories, heat recovery on all air streams using high efficiency enthalpy wheels, active air quality monitoring for airflow reset, condenser water/solar domestic hot water heating and daylight dimming throughout. The project is targeted to achieve a LEED Platinum Rating, and will achieve all available LEED Points for energy performance. |
