The Hartford Courant - Inserter Facility
The 24-foot high building was retrofitted to accommodate the Courant’s precise climate control requirements for its high speed inserting equipment. A new heating/cooling plant including chillers, boilers and distribution equipment was designed. Renovations included the design of a new energy saving VAV air handling system with five variable speed air handlers totaling 125,000 cfm, new distribution ductwork and a compressed air plant. Lighting and power distribution were upgraded. Interior space was refurbished for inserter plant operation with provisions for future expansion. The modifications included upgrading the truck loading facilities.
The Hartford Courant - Home Office
The four story addition houses offices built on raised access flooring, meeting rooms, a library and parking spaces. The renovated press room and production areas include offices, computer rooms, an atrium cafeteria and conference room. Renovations include new lighting, HVAC and an expanded chilled water plant and distribution system. Implementation of the renovation work was particularly challenging because of the critical need to have uninterrupted daily production of the nation’s oldest, continuously published newspaper.
