Cambridge School of Weston
Weston, MA
Garthwaite Center for Science and Art
Winner of the 2008 Top Ten Green Building Project Award
AIA Committeee on the Environment
Many highly progressive design and system approaches were incorporated into this project including:
- Composting toilet systems for all sewage waste treatment
- An observation gallery to permit direct vision of the central
mechanical systems in operation.
- Bio-Mass boiler systems for building and domestic water
heating
- Occupant visible instrumentation to view real time and annual
usage of energy and water by the building systems.
- A centralized mixed mode ventilation system permitting
on-demand control of ventilation rates.
New Maintenance Facilities Building
In order to make way for the new Science and Art Gallery Building, the existing antiquated maintenance building was
demolished. The Cambridge School requested a highly sustainable and functional solution for their new facility. This
project was approached with many of the same performance objectives as the new Science and Art Building.
Systems and Approach utilized include:
- Composting toilet systems
- Radiant floor heating
- Heat-recovery ventilation systems for shops and offices
- A mechanically assisted natural ventilation and ‘summer cooling’ systems using the building’s barn-like structure
for stack effect.
