One Penn Plaza
Cogeneration Project
New York, NY
van Zelm led the design team for the new $20 million cogeneration power plant at the 57-story One Penn Plaza in New York City. The city's largest commercial tower cogeneration plant provides half of the building's electricity and is set to reduce its carbon footprint by 40 percent. Producing 6.2 megawatts/hour, the project has been lauded as a trailblazer by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
- 6 MWe natural gas engine cogeneration plant, with steam and hot water heat recovery integrated to building HVAC systems, and designed for daily start/stop cycling service.
- Electrical interconnection to spot network power grid employing non-synchronous DC link power converters.
- Steam interconnection coordinated with building steam and district energy steam system, as well as providing service to steam turbine water chillers for summer season heat recovery.
- Project design efficiency and installation in conformance with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Commercial and Industrial Performance Program.
