Excellence Since 1930
Through the integration of architecture and technology, van Zelm Heywood & Shadford designs
building system infrastructures that improve the quality of life
in a way that balances the needs of the individual, society, and
the environment. van Zelm’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond designing green buildings for our clients — we employ environmentally friendly practices within our own operations.
At van Zelm, we bring the breadth and depth of technical knowledge and
experience embodied in our staff to every project. Engineering design
and consultation is our life's work, but at van Zelm, we never forget
that it is our client's interests we are dedicated to serve.
van Zelm utilizes Revit MEP 2011 and AutoCAD MEP 2011 with custom content to assist in the creation of efficient and accurate design documentation. |

Of Note
- "Simplified Method for Accurate Calculation of Evaporation from Swimming Pools", by Mirza M. Shah, PhD, PE, Fellow ASHRAE & ASME was published in the October 2011 issue of HPAC Engineering. The article provides look-up tables which give the results of calculations over a wide range of conditions, allowing the evaporation under design conditions for occupied and unoccupied pools to be read directly. These tables are based on Dr. Shah's formulas, which have been throughly verified with test data.
- van Zelm led the design team for the new $20 million cogeneration power plant at the 57-story One Penn Plaza in New York City. The city's largest commercial tower cogeneration plant provides half of the building's electricity and is set to reduce its carbon footprint by 40 percent. Producing 6.2 megawatts/hour, the project has been lauded as a trailblazer by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
