The Tsai Commons and Field House brings together recreation, wellness, athletics, and dining into one interconnected facility. With a total size of 253,000 gsf on a 23-acre site, the project includes new building and the restoration of the historic Field House. These spaces support diverse programming centered around student wellness, and include the dining hall, swimming pool, the ice rink, basketball courts, multipurpose fitness rooms, along with spacious back-of-house and locker room facilities to support programming.
The new dining facility accommodates over 500 students, staff, and faculty with a mezzanine dedicated to first-year students to create a sense of belonging and community. Consciously bringing athletics more to the forefront of campus life, the ice arena and the new aquatics center are visible to the dining commons. The ice arena provides seating for 1,000 spectators and the aquatics center includes an eight-lane pool, which supports the school’s swimming and diving programs as well as being available to the entire campus community.
A new central plant with geo-exchange heat pumps were incorporated into the building. This system allowed the heat generated by the chillers for making ice to be captured and then used in the heating of the pool. Radiant floor heating was utilized in common spaces. Energy recovery was incorporated in the air handling equipment. The large volume spaces were provided with high volume low speed de-stratification fans.
Construction was completed in two phases: Phase 1 in 2022 and Phase 2 in 2024.
Project was awarded LEED Silver Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, reflecting its commitment to environmental sustainability.
Construction Cost: $139,000,000
