The Massachusetts Maritime Academy is located in Buzzards Bay, MA and occupies a beautiful waterfront site at the head of the Cape Cod Canal. The campus is comprised of 16 buildings with a combined gross area of approximately 602,000 gsf. Campus energy needs are met primarily through the use of natural gas for heating and electricity (for cooling and general usage) provided by the utility grid and on-site generation by a wind turbine and solar PV systems. The institution and the State of Massachusetts wish to transition the campus to carbon free energy sources in the coming years to minimize environmental impact and improve resiliency. van Zelm Heywood & Shadford, Inc. provided mechanical and electrical engineering services associated with the development of the Carbon Neutrality Master Plan for the campus. The master planning effort evaluated existing campus facilities and their energy usage, outlined potential energy conservation options, developed and analyzed alternative energy sources, providing a roadmap for the development of new campus energy systems and facility upgrades to achieve carbon neutrality for the campus. The master plan recommendations were accepted by DCAMM/MMA and van Zelm was authorized to prepare a Phase I concept design. This was then issued to design/build contractors for implementation. van Zelm is continuing as Owner’s Engineer, providing peer review, project oversight and commissioning services and the project proceeds. The final design concept consists of a central geo-exchange borefield with 260 bores, feeding an energy transfer loop to serve distributed heat pump plants at each building or group of buildings.
